The GN 1/2 food container measuring 325 × 265 mm with a depth of 100 mm holds 6.5 l. A half module with a ten-centimetre wall works well for storing prepared ingredients that return to the station every day.
Six and a half litres is enough for a larger stock of one ingredient – a sauce, filling or chopped vegetables. The compact, near-square footprint makes mixing and serving easier, as every corner is about equally close.
In a GN cold cabinet, two such containers take up one level of runners. When planning the back of house, this is a convenient accounting unit: one level equals two ingredients at six and a half litres each.

Polypropylene withstands sub-zero temperatures, so freezing is possible. For liquid products, a few centimetres of margin is left, because the contents expand in volume when freezing.
How many portions of filling does 6.5 litres hold?
At a 150 g portion, that's about forty portions, assuming full use of the volume. The exact figure depends on the filling's density and how tightly it packs.
Will two GN 1/2 containers replace one GN 1/1?
In terms of surface area, yes, because two 325 × 265 mm footprints add up to 530 × 325 mm. The difference is practical: two smaller containers are easier to lift and wash out, and each can hold a different ingredient.
