The lid for a GN 1/9 gastronorm container has a footprint of 176 × 108 mm and is made of transparent polycarbonate. It closes the smallest module of the standard, and the fit is at the rim of the vessel, so one size serves every depth of this footprint.
For small inserts, the greatest value of a transparent panel is identifying the contents within a stack. A dozen or so closed vessels on one shelf differ, for staff, only in what can be seen through the lid.
Polycarbonate tends to be clearer and harder than opaque plastic, but reacts to strongly alkaline cleaning agents. It is worth washing the thin panel with a programme intended for plastics, since it is the one that loses its clarity fastest in the whole set.

With a lukewarm product, condensation forms under every lid, it is just that on a transparent one you can simply see it. The vessel is closed once the contents have cooled, so the panel stays clear and easy to read.
Can a polycarbonate lid be combined with a container made of a different plastic?
Yes, in the GN 1/9 module the rim has the same dimension regardless of the vessel's material. So one stack can hold containers from two series, closed with the same lid.
Can you write on the panel with a marker?
You can, but the writing defeats the purpose of the lid being transparent. It is more convenient to put the date on a label on the wall of the vessel, leaving the panel as a window onto the contents.
