With a rigid lid, yes, the weight is carried by the rim of the lower container. With flexible lids it is better to avoid this.
Will the lid discolour from strong spices?
Stainless steel is neutral in this respect, unlike many plastics. Marks from turmeric or paprika come off with ordinary washing.
How many lids is it worth ordering for a set of containers?
Usually fewer than containers, since some of the vessels work open on the line. For storage in the cold room, though, they are counted one to one.
