Steel lids are chosen for the heated section, since plastic there works in constant contact with steam and high temperature. This lid handles the cold sections, storage and transport.
Does transparency make sense for a vessel you look into anyway?
The benefit only appears with several vessels at once: instead of opening each one in turn, the whole row is checked in a single glance. With one insert the difference is small.
What causes the panel to dull?
Mainly strongly alkaline agents and scrubbing with a hard sponge. With detergents intended for plastics and the soft side of a scourer, the lid stays clear for much longer.
