The lid for GN 1/3 gastronorm containers measures 325 × 176 mm and is made of polypropylene. A three-way division of the module is the most common counter layout, so this size is usually ordered in the largest quantity.
The elongated shape gives a large panel area, so when stacking, a container placed on top stands stable along its whole length. This matters on trolleys, where vessels travel one on top of another between the kitchen and the service point.
In a shift-based circuit, the lid lets a vessel be closed right after service ends, without transferring the leftovers. The product goes into the cold room in the same container it was in on the counter.

In the heated section, plastic lids perform worse than steel ones, since they are exposed to constant contact with steam and high temperature. In cold sections and for storage they work without any reservations.
How many lids are needed for a set for a three-item counter?
As many as there are filled containers in circulation at once, usually twice as many as there are wells, so the reserve load stands already closed in the cold room.
Does it also fit steel GN 1/3 containers?
Yes, since the rim of the container has the same dimension in this module regardless of material. The only limitation remains the temperature at which a plastic lid can be used.
