Nine millimetres of span is the tightest of the three sizes. This follows from a simple relationship: the larger the vessel, the smaller the margin in which the gasket still holds the stack and does not yet block it.

Why is the range so narrow with large cups?
Because the margin between securely holding the stack and blocking it shrinks as the diameter grows. Hence three sizes instead of one universal one.
