The polycarbonate GN 1/2 lid covers an edge with a footprint of 325 × 265 mm. It closes containers holding from a few to more than ten litres, so its role goes beyond hygiene – it limits splashing during transport and allows containers to be set one on top of another.
With storage containers the transparent panel acts as an inspection window. Contents closed for several days are viewed from above, and every removal of the lid in the cold room means an exchange of air above the product.
A large, flat surface can also be tempting as a place to put things down. It is worth avoiding: a container set on it without its rim resting on the edge of the container below loads the centre of the panel.

Ask a questionDoes the lid close the container tightly?
It is laid onto the rim and does not form an airtight closure. It protects against drying out and contamination, but a container with liquid must not be tilted or transported standing on its side.
Will one lid serve containers of different depths?
Yes, the whole GN 1/2 family has an identical rim – the same panel sits on a 3.7-litre container and on an 11-litre one.
Is a polycarbonate lid better than an opaque one?
Better where the contents have to be seen: in the cold room, in the store, with containers closed for longer. With containers that carry a label and are opened daily, the difference comes down to appearance.
