How to choose

The evaporator is chosen for the capacity, the cooling unit for the space available

An evaporator on its own is a heat exchanger: it has to fit in the space the air passes through and have a route for the condensate to drain. A complete cooling unit delivers the same in one assembly – with a fan, a housing and a tray – so the installation comes down to seating it and connecting it.

The fin spacing decides how quickly the evaporator ices up. A dense pack gives more exchange area in the same volume, but working in humidity it frosts over faster and needs defrosting more often. In freezer duty a wider spacing is chosen deliberately, at the cost of size.

The third thing is condensate removal. The tray must fall towards the drain, and the drain must stay clear also when defrosting sends down more water at once. A frozen drain is the most common fault in this part of the circuit – and usually comes from the lack of a heater in the outlet, not from the evaporator itself.
