How to choose
Cold room fittings are chosen for the panel thickness and the weight of the door
The first figure is the thickness of the panel the fitting has to go into. Cold room handles and hinges state a version for a specific dimension – a fitting for a 60 mm panel will not reach the bolt in a 100 mm panel. It is a parameter that cannot be worked around with shims.
The second is the weight of the leaf. A cold room door with full insulation and a gasket weighs what it weighs, and the load is spread over two or three hinges. On doors taller than two metres it is worth counting on a third hinge, even if the capacity of two is theoretically enough – the point is to stop the leaf from flexing.
The third matter is safety: a cold room handle must have an inside release. A person shut in a freezer room has minutes, not hours, so this is not an optional feature. On freezer installations there is also heating of the door frame, so that the door does not freeze shut.
A pressure relief valve equalises the pressure after closing. Once the door is shut the air in the room cools and contracts, creating a vacuum – without a valve the door can stay jammed for several minutes.
