Wire or sheet – it comes down to airflow and cleaning

A wire shelf lets air through, so the cold reaches the product from every side, not only from above and below. In a unit with forced circulation that is the difference in temperature uniformity over the whole height of the display. A solid shelf blocks that circulation but stops spills reaching the level below.

The coating decides the resistance. Plastic coating is cheap and quiet, but once damaged it starts corroding from the chipped spot. Stainless steel costs more and goes anywhere there are sanitary requirements or cleaning with aggressive chemicals.

Shelf rails and supports set the adjustment pitch, that is by how much a shelf can be raised. Where the range on display changes, a finer pitch is sometimes more important than the load rating of the shelf itself.

A gravity roller system moves goods forward by their own weight. In retail refrigeration it solves a problem no shelf will solve: the product always stands against the glass, and staff do not have to push it forward by hand.
